Bitwarden, or Vaultwarden? What's the difference?

What is Vaultwarden?

Vaultwarden is a lightweight, open source implementation of the Bitwarden server API, written in Rust. It allows individuals and organizations to self-host a secure password management backend while using the full suite of official Bitwarden apps—including the browser extension, desktop app, and mobile apps.

The mypassword.care service is built on top of Vaultwarden, giving you the reliability and user experience of Bitwarden with the added transparency and flexibility of open source software.

Why use an open source implementation?

Using an open source implementation like Vaultwarden provides several benefits:

  • Transparency: You can inspect the source code yourself at https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden to see exactly how your data is handled.

  • Security: The codebase is regularly reviewed and improved by a global community.

  • Compatibility: It maintains full API compatibility with the official Bitwarden clients.

  • Control: You are always in control of your own data.

Summary

By leveraging Vaultwarden under the hood, mypassword.care gives you the best of both worlds: the polished, user-friendly Bitwarden experience, backed by a secure, transparent, and community-driven open source core. Whether you’re logging in from a desktop, mobile phone, or browser, you can trust that your credentials are encrypted and stored on infrastructure that prioritizes openness and privacy.
